Guided climbing and instruction in Joshua Tree National Park

2019-20 will be my 7th fall-winter-spring season teaching rock climbing in Joshua Tree, where I am currently permitted and insured through the Professional Climbing Guides Institute (PCGI). I’ll be available for individual and small group instruction and adventures in Joshua Tree from October 10, 2019 through May of 2020. Let’s put some dates on the calendar!

Guided adventures in the High Sierra and beyond

From the deserts and red rock canyons of Nevada and Utah, to the sheer face of El Capitan, to the high peaks of the Tetons, Bugaboos, Andes and Alps, climbing has led me to connect with inspiring people and magical places, again and again. Put my experience to work for you! Depending on availability of user-days from local permit-holders, I can arrange climbing adventures at SoCal’s own legendary Tahquitz and Suicide Rocks, in some of the best parts of the Sierra Nevada (Bishop, Mammoth and Lake Tahoe areas), right outside of Las Vegas in the massive playground of Red Rock Canyon, Devil’s Tower, Wyoming, and Smith Rocks, Oregon, just to name a few.

Rock climbing instruction—become a better, safer climber!

Nowadays I work mainly as a rock climbing guide, but throughout my twenties and early thirties I worked as an outdoor educator and wilderness guide, traveling all over the west to lead trips (and climbing whenever I wasn’t at work). Ten-plus years living out of cars and sleeping in the dirt—that’s one way to become a rock climber! If, like most people, you don’t have the time or inclination to quit your job, live in campgrounds and climb every day, the best way to fast-track your growth is professional instruction. Climbing with more-experienced partners, attending classes, reading books and watching videos will help—do all of those things!—but the fastest way to improve is one-on-one instruction. A good guide will quickly assess your skills and find exactly the right climbs and scenarios to push you to the next level. Small-group instruction can be almost as effective as one-on-one, especially if the students are at roughly the same experience level. Contact me about dates, and let me know what you want to work on! I can teach everything from basic safety skills and climbing fundamentals all the way to self-rescue and big-wall techniques.
